Bookkeeping

As your business grows and your financial responsibility expands, there comes a time when you need a qualified professional to manage the money.

A skilled bookkeeper will oversee your financial information, keep track of your transactions and turn your data into reports. Yet with thousands of bookkeepers in Australia claiming they can meet your business’s requirements, how do you know where to find the best?

The right bookkeeper fulfills a number of duties in your business including recording and processing incoming and outgoing transactions, taking care of banking duties and producing reports. It’s a role that requires specialised skills such as impeccable time management and organisation.

Bookkeepers don’t come much more experienced than Pat Robards, who has 30 years’ worth of experience in accounting and business, often in management and leadership positions. When you approach Robards Advisory to take control of the bookkeeping aspect of your business, you know you’re getting the industry’s best and most experienced.

How to get started

If you’re relatively new to business and bookkeeping is a recent development, here are some tips to get you started:

icn 1

Start simple: an accounting book with columns or ledgers, a program like Excel or an accounting software program like Xero (read on to find out more about that).

icn 2

Set up a separate business bank account. This one is a given when you start making serious money, but if you want to be ahead of the game, it’s worth sorting out early.

icn 3

Accurately record every transaction and make sure the books are balanced. You want keep to record each transaction and the account it goes in and out of to avoid any discrepancies or troubles down the line.

icn 4

Don’t neglect the importance of storing records securely. You don’t want to run afoul of the law and you definitely want to make sure you always know where to find invoices.

Bookkeeper

The role of the bookkeepers can make or break your business.

Whoever fills the role needs to offer value for money and make sure the business expands, not goes bust. With his many years spent in charge of various successful businesses, Pat has proven his reliability and competence.

It’s possible to become a bookkeeper by completing a Certificate IV or Diploma in Accounting at a TAFE institution. A course will teach you the basics of bookkeeping and allow you to hit the ground running, but it won’t give you the 30+ years of experience of somebody like Pat Robards.

Pat has an Advanced Diploma in Accounting from TAFE NSW and a Bachelor of Business with a major in Accounting from Southern Cross University. He’s been a senior accountant as well as a General Manager and a Principal and Tax Agent with his own business Robards and Rose.
